And that’s not all: in recent years, there are growing charges that some self-styled yoga organizations and their high-profile teachers are preying on their students - replacing spiritual enlightenment with psychological manipulation, New Age "hucksterism," and even cultic worship. The industrial consciousness or mindset that has created our current reality has some key characteristics that are deeply embedded in our work culture. We are not called to escape the consciousness of this world by achieving an elevated state of consciousness, but to follow Christ in the way of faithfulness. We are all aware that yoga means "union"and that the practice of yoga unites body, breath, and mind, lower and higher energy centers and, ultimately, self and God, or higher Self. Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress and anxiety. These obsessions can cause significant anxiety, leading individuals to engage in compulsive behaviors. The interplay between genetic, environmental, and neurochemical factors can vary from person to person, making it challenging to pinpoint specific causes. Western countries often do not realize that the yoga they call an exercise, actually hatha yoga ("ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon"), is just one of many forms of yoga designed for specific spiritual purposes. The appeal of hatha yoga is nothing less than the lifelong adventure and discipline of working with one's body as a door into freedom and wholeness. Hatha yoga teaches how to control the body and the senses so that the yogin (yoga student) can control the mind (Raja Yoga). Yoga has become so well packaged as an exercise that people even believe this was the original intent of yoga, often calling yoga "stretching exercises." People in the U.S. Our capacity to be present and in relationship with people who see the world differently than we do, to act in alignment with our deepest values, or to work through challenging issues together-all call for our most alert, mindful presence.
We need to tend in a holistic way to the people and places we care deeply about. We need to cultivate awareness moment by moment, so that we can begin to create new pathways in our brains, new ways of being in relationship - to those we live and work with, to the way we live and work, and to the natural world. This involves bringing your full attention to the present moment and cultivating an attitude of non-judgmental awareness. In all of our engagements at Center for Whole Communities, we bring in various forms of what we call awareness practice - which, depending on the faculty member who is leading that retreat, might be sitting or walking meditation, Qi Gong or Tai Chi, or perhaps the process of becoming aware of our own energy and connecting it with the world around us. These mood swings can be mistaken for typical childhood behavior or other psychiatric disorders, which further complicates the diagnosis process. The body is merely a tool in this process.
